The city of Florence has always been famous for its artistic and cultural heritage and was also the capital from 3 February 1865 to 3 February 1871. Another important tradition of this city, and of Tuscany in general, however, are also the typical trattorias. These are convivial places in which to eat well, which were born in ancient times in the “holes” of stately buildings. And it was precisely the Municipality of Florence that presented a list of trattorias classifying them as: “historical”, “historical of value” and “traditional”. The oldest trattorias in Florence are generally those found in the historic centre.
Among the restaurants in Florence, the first trattoria we offer, which has truly ancient origins, is the “Trattoria Gozzi“, located in Piazza San Lorenzo. Its birth, in fact, dates back to the 18th century, as a wine cellar in Palazzo Bandinelli.
The actual transformation into a restaurant then took place around the end of the 19th century.
It has been managed by the Gozzi family since 1915, offering its customers typical Florentine food. In addition to the kitchen, you will certainly appreciate the furnishings with nineteenth-century tables and wrought iron chandeliers.
Another very old and well-known trattoria is the “Trattoria Coco Lezzone“, located in Via Parioncino.
Its origins date back to the 1800s and it has been managed by the Paoli family since 1971. “The Osteria Antica Mescita San Niccolò” is located in Via San Niccolò and originated at the beginning of the 19th century.
Near Palazzo Vecchio, however, it is possible to find the “Trattoria Buzzino“, which dates back to the first half of the nineteenth century.
If instead we move towards the second half of the 19th century, we find the “Trattoria Sostanza” as a restaurant in Florence.
Born in 1869, it is located in Via del Porcellana and specializes in typical traditional Florentine cuisine.
The “Buca Lapi restaurant” was born as a trattoria in 1879 and is located in the cellars of Palazzo Antinori. From the 1960s onwards it was considered one of the meeting places in the city of Florence.
The “Buca Mario restaurant” is also located in a cellar and is located very close to the basilica of Santa Maria Novella.
The “Buca San Giovanni restaurant” was born in 1882 and is located near the Baptistery of San Giovanni. In addition to good food, you can appreciate the furniture which is protected by the Fine Arts. It is a rather well-known restaurant also among VIPs and internationally.
In the Duomo area, we can find the “Osteria Fiaschetteria Nuvoli“, which was initially born as a wine shop, to then offer its patrons typical Florentine dishes.
Among the trattorias of the 1900s we can instead name the “Trattoria Da Burde“, which was born in 1901 as a wine shop in via Peretola and then moved to via Pistoiese in 1927.
