In a place like Tuscany, there uis so much to see it can at times be overwhelming. We understand that so at Villa Campestri Olive Oil Resort, we try and share with you a little of what we love about our amazing region to help you navigate the best activities for you and your family.
This week our focus is on three museums we think you might not have heard of in Tuscany, from Florence and beyond. Sometimes you have to go off the beaten path to stumble upon gems like these. We also would love to hear you suggestions, share with us on our Facebook Page or twitter.
1. Museo del’Opificio di Pietra Dure. Location: Florence, Italy. Open from Monday to Saturday from 8:15am to 2pm. Pietre Dure is the art of making pictures from semi-precious stones that was the favorite of the famed Medici family. For just a few euros you can see some very impressive art in an area of the city that we personally find delightful, around San Marco. website
2. Church of San Francesco in Pisa. Address: Piazza S. Francesco, Pisa. Ok this might not be a museum but it really is a hidden gem. Here you will discover a mix of of late Romanesque and early Italian Gothic styles plus some amazing frescoes by Taddeo Gaddi (a disciple of Giotto) and the hanging bell tower. Tradition has it that the church was erected following St. Francis preaching in Pisa around the year 1211. It is a fact that a first Franciscan building was actually erected by Agnello and Alberto, two Pisan followers of the saint. Admission is Free.
3. Archeological Museum of the Mugello District. You will find this hidden gem on the main floor of the Municipal Building of Dicomano. We personally love it because it chronicles the history of the area through 30 years of archaeological research and here you will discover prehistoric objects from the municipalities of the Mugello valley, like Palazzuolo sul Senio, Mugelli (Bilancino), and Dicomano. Open strange days so we suggest sending them an email or giving them a call to schedule a visit.
