Tuscan summer: what to do and where to go

summer in tuscany

The summer months are generally accompanied by an irrepressible desire for trips out of town and holidays. Precisely for this reason we want to offer a little help in deciding what to do and where to go during the summer, focusing on a particularly rich region both from a naturalistic point of view and in terms of the activities to try: Tuscany. Ready to leave?

Historic cities rich in art

Tuscany has some of the most beautiful historic and art cities in the world, with truly unique places, architecture and works of art. A first idea about what you can do during the summer in Tuscany is to visit the major cities to discover all their beauties.

The choice is really wide: Florence, Pisa, Siena, Lucca, Arezzo, Pienza, Volterra, Livorno, Grosseto and many other cities, offer spectacular views, museums and architecture to visit, monuments to see and places of interest to be fully experienced, as well as multiple activities of various kinds.

Islands of the Tuscan coast

Let’s now pass to the seven splendid islands offered by the Tuscan archipelago: Elba Island, Capraia, Pianosa, Giannutri, Montecristo, Gorgona and Isola del Giglio.

Each of these islands is a reality of its own, with its own character different from the others able to offer a review of natural environments, vegetation, culture, art and history.

Those who want to spend a Tuscan summer in the name of the sea can choose one of these seaside destinations and discover it fully by taking advantage of the splendid sea on sunny days.

Alternatively, another idea is to visit all the different islands perhaps accompanied by expert environmental guides. In these places it is also possible to enjoy the panorama from relaxing boat trips and, for the more active people, to go trekking and excursions on organized routes immersed in nature.

Medieval reenactments in Tuscany

Here is a particular idea to spend a different summer in Tuscany: participate in the numerous medieval re-enactments of which the region is particularly rich.

These events are full of colors, performances, figures as flag-wavers and entertainers in historical clothes, sports competitions and are presented as excellent moments to taste the culinary delicacies typical of the place and which over time have made up its history and tradition.

Among the main events we remember the Palio of Siena, the Giostra dell’Orso in Pistoia, the Giostra di Arezzo and the historic football in Florence.

Festivals and culinary tradition in Tuscany

Tuscany, like all other regions of the Italian territory, is synonymous with excellent food and typical local dishes.

To get to the heart of the Tuscan culinary tradition, there is nothing better than a summer dedicated to festivals, organized throughout the region throughout the year but especially in the summer months. During the summer it is possible to spend wonderful days outdoors in company, tasting the typical products of Tuscany with music, entertainment and lots of fun.

And on these occasions, we recommend tasting a local excellence: artisanal ice cream. There is no shortage of historic ice cream parlors that also offer new flavors and can refresh hot days with tasty ice cream cones to eat comfortably seated at a table or during walks.
