Tuscan Winter Activities: Our Tips

Most people think to visit Tuscany during the summer months, and personally spring and autumn are our favorites times in Italy. But the winter also holds a special appeal. There are much less people to fight over museum tickets and crowd Tuscany’s tiny, charming alleyways.

While it Italy is definitely not as cold as other European countries, we do recommend bringing a good jacket, scarf and flat boots to protect yourself from windy days and chilly nights. A great pair of leather gloves is a perfect purchase in Tuscany – where leather makers have been expertly crafting these sorts of products for centuries.

There are so many activities that can inspire and delight those visiting Tuscany in winter, one of which is enjoying emptier touristic towns, like Florence and Siena. While weekends tend to remain crowded as locals head to the center for holiday shopping, there is nothing quite as beautiful as wandering through these special towns, outfitted in Christmas lights, chestnut vendors and hot chocolate await hungry visitors.

Also winter hiking is a lot of fun as long as you dress warm. There are many hiking trails around the region, ranging from beginners to expert. Last but not least, we say indulge in one of Tuscany’s many thermal spas. Natural hot springs are abundant in our favorite region in Italy and during the winter months, you can soak in naturally warm water as the air surrounds you remains chilly.
