At least since 600 years, on February 14th, love and lovers are celebrated. This ritual takes place in Italy (although the first to celebrate it were the French) and in every part of the world.
Valentine’s Day is a day when lovers exchange gifts and spend romantic moments together to sanctify their love.
Little cards, chocolates, kisses, little hearts and gifts, Valentine’s Day is celebrated in many countries of the world in the same way, but not everywhere is the feast of lovers.
In fact, in countries like Finland, the United States, Guatemala and many others it is also the friendship party.
But who is Saint Valentine and why do we celebrate it?
The origins of the Valentine’s Day are identified with the Catholic Church’s attempt to “Christianize” the pagan rite of fertility.
In fact, for the ancient Romans, February was the period when we were preparing for the rebirth season and the celebrations of the “Lupercali” began, to keep the wolves away from the cultivated fields.
The names of men and women who worshiped this god were placed inside an urn, a child extracted the names of some couples who would live in intimacy for a whole year, so that the fertility rite was concluded.
The forerunner fathers of the Church, determined to put an end to this practice, which was considered immoral, they wanted find a saint of lovers to replace the vicious “Lupercus”. In 496 d.C. Pope Gelasio canceled the pagan feast establishing that the cult of St. Valentine was followed: a martyr who became the protector of love all over the world.
